Ruth Reynard has written an article, Creating Assignments That Work for Digital Learning Environments, that makes several points that have been discussed at various times this year. It’s interesting that while she wrote this article from her background with adult education, many of the points can relate to our work with third and fourth graders.

Effort Rubric
Here’s a rubric focused on student effort. It comes from Classroom Instruction that Works by Marzano, Pickering, and Pollock. I think it fits with our goal of “persistence.” I think it could also be worked in with our team skills rubrics.

Differentiated Learning
I have included a couple of links below that connect Active Learning and Differentiated Instruction with student success. Both articles are quick reads and offer links to additional resources and thought-provoking articles & blog posts.
Active Learning is Key to Differentiated Instruction
Identifies the need to encourage students to learn and produce at their “best level” through grouping strategies, design of PBL experiences, and options for learning activities.
Differentiated Instruction Allows Students to Succeed
This post gets at what I consider our ‘high hanging fruit’ – those students in the middle who don’t stand out and rarely demand our instructional attention. How much richer can we make their learning experiences? How can we deliberately modify our instruction or an assignment to meet them at their learning edge?
Classroom Reflections
Please consider the following questions as you reflect on your visit with our !gnite classes. Please share your thoughts by replying to this post.
- What did you observe about the teacher’s role?
- What did you observe about the students role?
- How might the flexibility of these roles impact a student’s learning experience?
- Did you see any evidence of this today?
- What questions did you form?
- What will you continue to investigate or focus on as you observe/learn more about !gnite classrooms?
